Quality Inspection Case Study
Pre-Shipment Quality Inspection of USB Table Lamps in China
Sauce Asia's China-based inspection team carried out a pre-shipment inspection of 50 brushed-brass USB table lamps manufactured for the UK market. The inspection identified cosmetic, stability and assembly defects that a basic factory power test would not have caught.
Project at a glance
- Product
- Brushed-brass USB table lamps for UK retail
- Quantity inspected
- 50 units
- Defect types identified
- Cosmetic scratches, glass globe defects, assembly faults
- Outcome
- Defects documented; remedial action required before shipment
The Product
The lamps were brushed-brass-effect table lamps intended for the UK retail market. Each unit comprised:
- Brushed-brass-effect metal base and stem
- Frosted glass globe shade
- E14 lamp holder and bulb
- UK three-pin plug
- Integrated on/off switch
- Two USB charging ports
Inspection Scope
The inspection covered 50 units and included the following checks:
- Product measurements and weight
- Assembly and component fit
- UK three-pin plugs and wiring
- On/off switch operation
- USB port function and fit
- E14 lamp holder and bulb
- Base stability and level
- Cosmetic finish on bases, stems and globes
- Packaging condition
Functional Testing
All 50 lamps were powered on simultaneously to verify basic electrical function. The photographs show the lamps illuminated during this stage of the inspection — both the globe versions and the candle-bulb variants.
Passing a power test confirms that a lamp switches on. It does not confirm that the product meets the required cosmetic standard, that the base is stable, or that components are correctly and neatly assembled. The functional test is one element of a pre-shipment inspection, not a substitute for it.
Defects Identified
The inspection identified a number of defects across the batch. Each defect was marked with a red arrow sticker, photographed and recorded on the inspection checklist. The findings included:
- Scratches and marks on brushed-brass bases
- Dents or deformation around some base edges
- Marks on some frosted glass globes
- Four lamps with uneven or wobbling bases
- Switches or USB assemblies not fitting flush within the base
- General inconsistencies in the visible finish across the batch
Each defect was documented with a photograph and recorded on the inspection report, providing the UK importer with clear evidence of the issues found.
Why Pre-Shipment Inspection Matters
The lamps in this inspection powered on. Without a pre-shipment inspection, a UK importer relying solely on a factory power test would have received the full batch without knowing about the cosmetic damage, unstable bases or assembly problems.
Once defective goods reach the UK, the importer faces a difficult situation. Depending on the severity and the customer, the consequences can include customer complaints and returns, replacement or rework costs, storage costs for rejected stock, disputes with the Chinese supplier, and damage to the importer's own reputation.
A pre-shipment inspection in China, carried out before goods leave the factory, gives the importer the information needed to make an informed decision — whether to accept the batch, request rework, negotiate a price adjustment, or reject the shipment — while the goods are still accessible and the supplier is still accountable.
